Home Made Windmill & Small Wind Mill Design

A windmill is device that changes wind energy into mechanical power which is then turned into electrical energy.

Typical Windmill Component Parts • The blades - Typically a windmill can have any number of blades from four up to 20. There are special windmills that could have a higher number of blades.

• The tower - The tower allows the rotating blades to be held up high so the wind will rotate them.

• The shaft - The shaft is used to bring the blades and the tower together for a smooth rotation.

• The generator - The generator is what creates electricity from the mechanical energy. It also holds in power for future use.

• The base The base allows the windmill to be kept in the ground.

What are some factors that affect a windmill's design? There are several factors that affect the make of a windmill. Let's take a look at the major ones:

• Wind speed An anemometer helps measure the wind speed accurately. It can't be determined what kind of wind mill to get without having an accurate wind speed.

• Wind direction For designing a windmill, it is also important to know the direction from which the wind flows the majority of the time.

• Variation in wind speed Apart from the constant speed of mind, it will be best to know how the speed of the wind changes.

• Change of wind direction The direction of wind will not be constant, so it important to be aware of the way it changes its path.

• Barriers on the site It is best to put in a windmill at a location without many obstructions. Watch out for existing and possible structures that could affect the functioning of your windmill.

• Wind turbulence You won't always be able to predict the movement of the wind. However, it would be a good idea to be aware of the pattern of wind turbulence in your site.

• Distance of wind movement from the bottom of the windmill The height of the tower should be determined based on where the wind is active.

What are some designs for wind mills? Aerodynamics decides the design of a windmill built on the factors shown in the section above. The designs of windmills differ in the following measures:

• Amount of blades
• The structure of the blades
• Length of the tower
• Style of generators
• Distance of the installation spot from the ground
• The distance between the generator and the tower
